Concerning Mars (Wiener Spielwut)
Journalist Mr. Rigby, meets Eleanor on her last day on earth. Years ago she had been selected to be part of the first “womanned” mission to Mars. It is set out to be a one-way trip.
It is 7:30 in the morning when Scotty wakes Eleanor. Scotty is an AI system. Bodiless, but omnipresent through its voice, it helps Eleanor with her every day routine at the “Mars-Bound Space Centre”. Functioning as her couch, supervisor and friend – a hypothetical shoulder to lean on throughout the extensive training period. Installed by the MBSC program Scotty supervises, supports and protects Eleanor, not least from herself.
We meet Eleanor on day 1117 of the program. It is her last day of training and it is also going to be her last day on earth. Years ago, out of thousands of applicants, she had been selected to be part of the first manned, or in her case “womanned”, mission to Mars. Its goal was the establishment of a permanent human settlement on Mars. For Eleanor and her colleagues, it is going to be a one-way trip.
Amid the chaos, excitement and tension of the final hours, Eleanor meets charismatic Mr. Rigby, a journalist from “Life Magazine”, for an all exclusive pre-launch interview. What starts as a regular Q&A session quickly dissolves into an exploration, not only of the possibilities of outer space, but of the infinite vastness of uncertainty and ignorance that constitutes the human condition. Like a bright light bulb illuminating a stage within a world that has become hostile to itself and its inhabitant, the two of them suddenly find themselves looking deeply into their so very human eyes. In a whirling dance, they are drawn into the deeper spheres of the human psyche. Again and again orbiting the question of “Why would you want to go to Mars?” and the counter question: “Why would you want to stay on earth?”
“Concerning Mars” is a 35 to 45 minute play, including music, dance, a robot voiceover that sounds nothing like Stephen Hawking, as well as a couple of Dylan Thomas references. Whether “Concerning Mars” is set in the future rather than the present is something everyone has to decide for themselves. The play questions and explores ideas of the good life, solitude and the blissful promise of immortality.
“Don’t you find, that the good thing about home is, that leaving - as coming back, can equally be the greatest thing?”
“Mr. Rigby, by all due respect, I am not sure I believe in the idea of “home” quite as much as you do. I am here today and I will be going somewhere else tomorrow. It’s actually quite simple.”
