Brief aus Afghanistan
Letter of hope in challenging times
Following the events in Afghanistan via media news
from distance

with a heavy heart
Some years ago, I have attended an international women's summit in the House of the United Nation in Vienna. One of the speakers and contributors was Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, founder and Executive Director of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), an Afghan women-led NGO she founded in 1995 to provide teacher training to Afghan women, to support education for boys and girls using grassroots strategies and a holistic approach, and to and to provide health education to women and children.
In her presentation at the UN Vienna, Dr. Yacoobi has introduced her educational methodology, highlighting poetry, especially Rumi- poetry, as one of her pivotal tools for literacy training.
Such a creative approach raised my curiosity and interest to hear more about her work and conditions in the country. During the lunch time-networking, we shared the table and could exchange some experiences on art-based education.
Keeping in touch via email newsletters, I could follow the activities and progress of Dr. Yacoobi´´`´ s organization that serves hundreds of thousands of women and children each year through its training programs, Learning Centers, schools, and clinics in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Her engagement has been internationally acknowledged and she has been awarded a number of prizes, fellowships, and awards. In 2007, Dr. Yacoobi was inducted as the first Senior Ashoka Fellow from Afghanistan, and in 2010, she was named the Asia Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award by the Schwab Foundation. Furthermore, in 2011 she was awarded the Afghan National Peace Award, in 2013 Opus Prize, in 2015 she received the WISE Prize in Education, and in 2016, the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education. Dr. Yacoobi holds six honorary degrees, including one from Princeton University.´

Today, I have received an email from Dr. Jacobi with an immediate release. Despite the emerging situation, her school in Afghanistan remains open.
A light of hope.
By sharing this short personal impression and Dr. Yacoobi´'s letter -emerging release- I hope that such an endeavor will shed light on the actual situation of the AIL institute within the wider population, and reach individuals, communities, and organizations who might be able to provide necessary support:

“Plant a tree of friendship that makes your heart rain - remove the seedlings of the enemy so that it fears to suffer.
Let's win together with acceptance and future problems so that the next generation can live brotherly with them and pass the cold season of oppression and rebellion that it is no longer possible to tolerate so much pain.”
