THEORY OF PROTECTION
Daria Koltsova
In 2014 when Russia invaded Ukraine, Daria Koltsova lived in Kyiv. Back then war didn’t reach Kyiv through bombing but many refugees fled there from the East of Ukraine. War came with people’s experience and their stories. Koltsova began to understand that war changed everything and art could make these changes visible. She noticed, for example, that all refugee children started to draw houses with escape ladders and exits. Once a child drew expressive red lines above his school, explaining it was lava. He didn’t have the right word for shelling. Today all children in Ukraine know these words.
Eight years ago, people in Donbas started to cover their windows into beautiful geometric patterns using duct tape in order to protect themselves from explosions – a simple practice that can save life. Thus, Koltsova started working on an art project using different patterns, introducing it as THEORY OF PROTECTION. Because safety and protection could not be certain anymore and turned into a theory destroyed by reality.
Eight years ago, the artist couldn’t imagine to find taped windows in Kyiv or in Lviv, which is 1300 km away from Donbass. Far away. But eight years passed and Russians now bomb Lviv as well as Donbass. Berlin, where Koltsova lives now is just 922 km away from Lviv and Vienna only 700 km. The world is small and maybe not prepared for wars. Security and even yesterday’s semi-peaceful reality turned out to be very fragile.
THEORY OF PROTECTION became a simple but visible gesture of solidarity with Ukraine. More than 250 diplomatic and cultural institutions on five continents taped their windows. Now we invite you to think about the THEORY OF PROTECTION. Because it is not a Ukrainian war anymore. It's a war for democracy and democratic values all over the world. A war between the past and the future. Unfortunately, art itself can't stop it, however, people can.
